Minnesota dairy industry crowns 58th Princess Kay of the Milky Way

Mary Zahurones, an 18-year-old college student from Pierz, Minnesota, was crowned the 58th Princess Kay of the Milky Way in an evening ceremony at the Minnesota State Fairgrounds Aug. 24. As Princess Kay, Zahurones, who represents Morrison County, will serve as the official goodwill ambassador for Minnesota’s nearly 4,500 dairy farmers. She is the daughter of Chuck and Pat Tax of Pierz, and will attend the University of Minnesota Twin Cities this fall as a pre-med student studying biology and chemistry. Twelve county dairy princesses competed for the Princess Kay of the Milky Way title. Stephanie Kasper of Owatonna, Minnesota, representing Steele County, and Theresa Twohey of Stewartville, Minnesota, representing Olmsted County, were selected as runners-up. Twohey was also named Miss Congeniality. Scholarships were awarded to Erin Daninger of Forest Lake, Minnesota, representing Washington County, April Johnson of Heron Lake, Minnesota, representing Cottonwood County, and Emily Krekelberg of Le Sueur, Minnesota, representing Le Sueur County.

DeLaval engage in herd management knowledge share with China

DeLaval continues its engagement in developing milk production and animal welfare in China. Eleven dairy managers from China visited DeLaval at Hamra Farm in Sweden on Aug. 19 for an introduction program to learn more about dairy farm management. This is an initiative taken by DeLaval, the Swedish University of Agriculture Science (SLU), The Ministry of Agricultural in China, China Agricultural University, BCAG (Sanyuan) and Tetra Pak; the first phase of which started already in 1984.

Cydectin Pour-On Buck-A-Liter Program contributes nearly $200,000 to Wounded Warrior Project

Beef and dairy producers supported returning veterans in a big way through purchases of Cydectin Pour-On this spring. Through the Cydectin Buck-a-Liter campaign, Boehringer Ingelheim Vetmedica, Inc. donated nearly $200,000 this summer to Wounded Warrior Project.

World Dairy Expo Championship Dairy Product Contest announces grand champion winners

Babcock Hall Dairy Plant, Madison, Wisconsin, was selected as the Cheese and Butter Grand Champion and Gifford’s Dairy, Skowhegan, Maine, was selected as the Grade A & Ice Cream Grand Champion of the World Dairy Expo (WDE) Championship Dairy Product Contest. This year’s contest, sponsored by the Wisconsin Dairy Products Assn. (WDPA), received a record number of 705 entries for cheese, butter, fluid milk, yogurt, cottage cheese, ice cream, sour cream, sherbet, cultured milk, sour cream dips, whipping cream, dried whey and creative/innovative products from throughout the U.S.

Penn State Extension Dairy Team is resuming its successful Friday Facilitator Forum webinar series for dairy advisory teams in September. “Staying on Course: Helping Your Team to Achieve its Goals” will be presented Sept. 16 by Dr. Lisa Holden, associate professor, Penn State Department of Dairy and Animal Science. This session in the series will offer strategies that dairy advisory teams can use to break long-term goals into manageable chunks that can be monitored and completed. In addition, new tactics for refocusing goals for long-term teams to revitalize and energize team members will be explored.

Seventeen 4-H and FFA dairy project members from across Illinois took part in the 2011 Superior Young Dairy Producer Award (SYDPA) program on Aug. 20 at the Illinois State Fair. “The purpose of the contest is to create an educational activity that promotes youth development, career development, and personal growth through increased knowledge of the dairy industry,” said Dave Fischer, retired University of Illinois Extension dairy educator.

Pfizer Animal Health donates $6,252 to the North Dakota Flood Relief Program

Pfizer Animal Health has felt the effects of the summer’s flooding – most directly in Mandan, North Dakota, from flood victim Donny Wald, territory manager, Pfizer Animal Health. With no escape from the flooding in Mandan and surrounding communities, residents had to stay and battle the rising flood waters. Both the Salvation Army and the Red Cross were there to support the efforts. As a result, Wald and Pfizer Animal Health split the donation equally between the Salvation Army Bismarck/Mandan Service Center and American Red Cross West Dakota Chapter.
