Thomas is a partner in Countryside Veterinary Clinic, LLP in northern New York. The practice employs eight veterinarians and services about 200 clients. According to the DAIReXNET site, his presentation will focus on optimizing nutrition in a group setting, including tips on practical concepts for ad libitum and acidified feeding.

This is the first issue that was written and published completely after the end of this year’s World Dairy Expo. The show is always a great place to meet story sources, find new article ideas and meet with producers. Our group happened to arrive at Dane County Regional Airport in Madison, Wisconsin, at the same time as California dairyman Ray Prock. He was coming to the show to work at the dairy checkoff’s booth. We gave him a lift from the airport to his hotel. His parting words were to “have fun” during the week-long exhibition.

The View from Here: Reporting from Beatrice, Nebraska …

I flew my Mooney aircraft to the southeast corner of Nebraska, landing in Beatrice. While visiting a good friend there, I found myself embedded in the farm communities quite different than ours in Michigan. Let me describe my visit. Center pivot irrigation is king. And this year, especially so. Most crop fields are irrigated – and those that are not really suffered with the dry year. The dryland corn yielded 40 to 60 bushel corn, and the irrigated corn, while not yet harvested, is expected to be just under normal.
