Just dropping by ... One candle of faith is extinguished and the world grows darker

January 19, 2012
Not long ago, I wrote an article that was perceived as a political ploy and an attack on the Catholic church. I was horrified when I read the critic’s message and realized how I had been so totally misunderstood.

Marin Bozic: Kairos' long hair lock

January 1, 2012
Marin Bozic
Below is an excerpt from Marin Bozic’s blog. Bozic is an assistant professor of agricultural economics at the University of Minnesota. Learn more at: http://www.marinbozic.info/ How do I reconcile the great optimism about dairy exports that I have with the apparently pessimistic results of my analysis on the impact of exports on long-run profits? Did you hear about Kairos? According to Greek mythology, Zeus (the bigshot among Gods) had a son called Kairos. He symbolized opportunity and was always on the run. He had a single long lock of hair falling over his forehead, but he was bald in the back. Thus, you can easily catch him as he is approaching, but once he has run past you, the opportunity has gone.

Mr. Chairman, Weighing in on immigration

December 30, 2011
Karen Lee
In November, dairy producers gathered in Madison, Wisconsin, for a Dairy Policy Summit hosted by the Professional Dairy Producers of Wisconsin (PDPW). During the session “Immigration Reform: What’s Really the Issue?” four speakers addressed this controversial topic and what it means for agriculture. Here are excerpts of statements made by presenters at the Summit: “My point is this country has always had people to do those jobs that the rest of society thought was minor. That hasn’t changed. We still have that great need. This isn’t about numbers. It’s not about unemployment.

Will 2012 be a happy new year?

December 29, 2011
Alan B. Gunderson
It’s that time of year again. 2011 is a memory. It’s in the books. It’s history. If you’re like me, it’s time to reflect on where we’ve been, what we’ve learned and where we want to go. The trick is to take the wisdom and experience we’ve gained and apply it to the business environment we expect to encounter in the year to come.

The Milk House: Notes on Rocky Island agriculture

December 29, 2011
Ryan Dennis
The Aran Islands lay off the west coast of Ireland as three small shadows in the haze of Galway Bay. Inis Oírr (pronounced “inish ear”) is not much more than a square mile.Like the other two islands, it is one of the few remaining gaeltachts where Irish (mistakenly called Gaelic by Americans) is still the primary language.

Just dropping by ... Success habits for the new year

December 29, 2011
The horns blow, whistles scream, firecrackers rattle, confetti floats into the sky and shouts of “Happy New Year” rend the air to signify the death of the old year and herald in the new.It is just a second before the old dies and the new begins, but it only takes a second to change a life forever. It begins with a desire to “walk in newness of life."
