Change is only getting bigger, so think big and lead big

March 20, 2013
Greg Squires
Any progress that has ever been realized throughout history is the direct result of change. While this is an indisputable fact, many people say they just don’t like change. Here is how psychologist Dr. Heidi Grant Halvorson explains this human phenomenon: “It’s not just that people fear change, though they undoubtedly do. It’s also that they genuinely believe (often on an unconscious level) that when you’ve been doing something a particular way for some time, it must be a good way to do things. And the longer you’ve been doing it that way, the better it is.”

Focus on the front lines

March 20, 2013
Tom Wall
I spend a lot of time on the road, traveling from dairy to dairy, hotel to hotel. And I’ll admit, I don’t always eat as healthy as I should. It seems that every time I have lunch, I have one hand on the steering wheel and the other on a sandwich. The other day, I stopped at a fast-food place at the top of an exit ramp. I decided I would treat myself to a small shake. The young lady who took my order barely said five words. And the other girl that poured the shake ... she just set it on the counter without saying a word or even looking up at me.

Tax law changes you should know for 2013

March 20, 2013
David Bekedam
The fiscal cliff has come and gone, and the nation has survived. I’m sure many of you were up late on New Year’s Eve glued to the TV awaiting a decision from Congress on a plan that would save the country from financial ruin. When the negotiating and politicking was over and the dust settled, we ended up with exactly what we expected from our government: a short-term fix to a long-term problem.

3 strategies to make your team meetings count

March 20, 2013
Lisa Holden and Rebecca White
Many dairy businesses today are utilizing dairy advisory teams as sound management tools for improved idea generation, enhanced communication and superior decision-making. However, some teams aren’t as efficient as they could be and become a social hour more than an effective business meeting. If you have a dairy team in place, take a minute to look around the table at the various team members and assess the cost of having that team in place. If you have eight team members meeting for 1½ hours every quarter, that’s 48 hours.

Who’s responsible for safety leadership on your dairy?

March 20, 2013
Kimberly Naffziger
A safety leader can set the tone for safety in your dairy operation, especially when aligned with management. The safety coordinator directs planning and monitoring and is a key player in a successful safety program. Without this kind of leadership, critical activities such as safety inspections or training can fall through the cracks. A safety coordinator is responsible for knowing the federal, state and local laws and regulations that can impact the operation.

What does it mean to be an ‘antifragile’ dairy?

March 19, 2013
Scott Stewart
The author who brought us Black Swans (unexpected events with big consequences) is back, and he’s raising a very thought-provoking question every dairy producer should ask in this era of market volatility: Is your dairy “fragile” or “antifragile?” The author is Nassim Nicholas Taleb, professor of risk engineering at New York University’s Polytechnic Institute. His new book, Antifragile: Things That Gain from Disorder, will make you think about how to strengthen your business to survive ups and downs.

Mary Bauer, William Brazile, David Douphrate, and Kyle Root
The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) requires all dairy employers to provide a safe and healthful workplace free of recognized hazards and follow all applicable standards. Click here to view one of these standards, OSHA Recordkeeping regulation (29 CFR 1904). According to the recordkeeping standard, employers are required to prepare and maintain records of occupational injuries and illnesses.

True leadership isn’t always popular

February 28, 2013
Tom Wall
Chances are when you were growing up, your parents were a lot like mine ... strict and frugal. The first time my dad took my brother and I fishing on Lake Michigan, we were about 10 or 11 years old. A friend of my dad invited us on his boat that he kept in front of the McDonald’s in Two Rivers, Wisconsin.

Motivating your team: How to invest in your workforce

February 28, 2013
Amy Schutte
Too many managers are trying to “teach hens to swim.” It’s a simple analogy that can refocus a business and give managers a new question to ask themselves, “Are we empowering potential in our workforce?” Motivating employees and investing in their strengths are the last things some managers think of on a dairy operation and, according to Declan Coyle of Andec Communications, empowering your team is one of the most important parts of a business.
