Rotational grazing makes economic sense for Missouri dairy

August 9, 2012
Dave Wilkins
Fourth-generation dairyman Mike Meier likes to go hunting in December and January. There’s no reason to bring in hired labor to milk his 92-head herd while he’s gone. All the cows are dry. Meier first became intrigued with the idea of seasonal grazing when, in the mid-1990s, a demonstration dairy at the University of Missouri’s Southwest Research Center started showing the economic benefits of such a system.

The realities of robotic milking technology today

August 9, 2012
Francisco Rodriguez
I was born and raised on a dairy farm in Colombia where, from an early age, I was embracing the lifestyle of and nurturing a passion for milking cows. My family and I organized our lives and schedules around the needs of the herd. The challenge of finding the right competencies on our dairy inspired me to attend veterinary school.

Audit team: Ration and milk quality both needed review

August 9, 2012
David Greene
When a 1,150-cow dairy asked for a TMR audit, we welcomed the opportunity to work with this well-run operation to help it gain ever greater production efficiencies. Even well-run dairies often have opportunities that an outsider can see more easily than someone immersed in the dairy’s daily management.

CIP Challenge: Putting a magnifying glass on maintenance

August 9, 2012
Ron Robinson
Regardless of which hemisphere you call home, if you run a dairy, maintenance issues can sneak up on you. The CIP Detectives were recently called to an 800-cow operation in Japan to catch any culprits that could be affecting milk quality. The dairy in Japan was ISO-certified for environmental management and had been successfully operating for more than 100 years. They had a 60-stall rotary parlor with a 90-lb-per-day milk average.

Economic considerations for direct tanker loading on dairies

August 9, 2012
Earl D. Biggers
Editor’s note: The following article is the final installment in a series regarding direct tanker loading systems. In the previous two articles, we considered some of the capital costs and marketing criteria a producer should consider when planning for a milk cooling and storage system. In this article, we’re going to compare the annual operating costs of a direct tanker loading (DTL) system to those same costs for a conventional, on-farm bulk tank system.

3 open minutes with Charlie Arnot

August 9, 2012
Walt Cooley
Ag communications consultant and owner of CMA Consulting Charlie Arnot recently said this summer’s consumer and news media attention on food brands and agriculture production should be an “inflection point” in how agriculture perceives crisis management and the defense of traditional farming practices. Progressive Dairyman Editor Walt Cooley asked Arnot to explain his statement.

Develop consciousness in your dairy business

August 9, 2012
Jorge M. Estrada
What is consciousness and why does it matter to your dairy? Consciousness is the capacity to catch and learn from reality, to be attentive and paying attention to our internal world and to the world that surrounds us. It is what allows us to adapt to our environment and to act in order to get the most out of our potential in life. As humans, we are able to think and act beyond instinctive impulses and conditioning – we are able to “manage” ourselves. And even though we can manage ourselves, being autonomous is a possibility, not a gift – we need to develop it through conscious choices.

Five ways to get employees to take responsibility

August 9, 2012
Richard Hadden
In his book Moments of Truth, Jan Carlzon, former CEO of the Swedish airline SAS, states that “An individual without information cannot take responsibility. An individual who is given information cannot help but take responsibility.” If we want those who fuel the success of our businesses, our workers, to be more engaged in that success, there are at least five questions that we, as leaders, must answer for every person on the payroll.

Why you must develop a passion for information

August 9, 2012
Greg Squires
I’ve been hearing a lot of conversation recently about the profitability of milking cows. The buzzwords include three-year price cycles, three-year production cycles, market stability, market risk, risk management and a host of others. I am hopeful some of these discussions have caught your attention. Obviously the year 2009 is a driver of many of these conversations; it was difficult for most dairy producers. Recent milk and feed markets have renewed these concerns over industry profitability.

Repurposed corner: Swimming pool safety covers

August 3, 2012
Damon Carson
The byproduct of industry: Whether at a hotel or in the backyard of a residence, what is the biggest fear of any swimming pool owner? The fear of someone accidently falling in the pool and drowning. To prevent such a horrible tragedy, these same owners often cover their pools with a heavyweight safety cover to keep a potential victim safely above the water in case of an accidental fall. When purchasing a safety cover, a pool owner can choose between a heavier, and more expensive, solid vinyl tarp or a lighter, less expensive mesh cover.
