Characteristics of high-confidence marketers

May 18, 2012
Mark Ludtke
It’s fitting that Progressive Dairyman include a marketing article in the issue focused on peak milk production and quality. After all, these days, dairy producers need to have as much confidence in handling markets as they do handling their high-producing cows. To gain that confidence, it’s best to examine what success looks like. Much like dairy producers group cows to manage their care, we could group our clients according to the characteristics they have as marketers – from the high-confidence group that has been through many market cycles on through to the newest clients who are still learning.

What’s your main focus?

May 18, 2012
Tom Wall
When was the last time you stopped to think about your personal “business philosophy?” In other words ... when it comes to work, what do you value and focus on the most? Regardless of how often your day-to-day challenges change, your “business compass” should remain pretty constant as you navigate through these ups and downs. So what’s at the center of the way you make decisions and prioritize your time?

You got emotionally hijacked, now what?

May 18, 2012
Jorge M. Estrada
Low milk price, high costs of feed, an employee with a really bad attitude – now SCC has spiked for the week – can you take all the pressure? All of a sudden, someone comes and adds to the bad news; you react and you unleash a reaction all human beings have been dealing with since humankind has been around. Even though the thinking human brain has somewhat evolved over thousands of years, there are parts of the human brain that haven’t had a hardware upgrade in about 100,000 years. According to world-renowned emotional intelligence expert Daniel Goleman, most of us are still acting out of the ancient fight-freeze-or-flight response, and an upgrade is long overdue.

High milk peaks ultimately mean more revenue

May 18, 2012
John Hibma
One of the things dairy farmers have had endlessly drummed into their consciousness in recent decades is the importance of getting their cows to reach maximum milk peaks at the onset of lactation. Nutritionists, feed salesmen, extension agents, veterinarians, accountants, bankers, semen salesmen and even hoof trimmers all get on the bandwagon of encouraging high milk peaks – because, theoretically, the more milk your cows give, the better your chances of staying in business tend to be. Of course, all those aforementioned professionals have a very biased financial stake in a dairy farm’s financial health.

Market considerations for direct tanker loading

May 18, 2012
Earl D. Biggers
The following article is the second in a series of three regarding direct tanker loading systems. Click here to read the first article by Earl Biggers in the November 1, 2011 issue of Progressive Dairyman. In a previous article, we provided an overview of some of the criteria a producer should consider when planning for a milk cooling and storage system for the farm. Probably the most significant factor in deciding whether or not to go with a direct tanker loading (DTL) system, is the requirements of the actual market (or plant). After all, installation costs are meaningless if no processor is willing to accept DTL shipments. In this article, we will take a closer look at those market considerations.

Consistent management the key to growth at Minnesota dairy

May 18, 2012
Dario Martinez
Although managing dairy cows is the basic foundation of any dairy operation, the consistent management of cows and the people working with them is the principal factor to the success of Blue Mound Dairy near Luverne, Minnesota. Rick Van Santen and his wife, Carrie, own and operate the 1,000-cow dairy with the help of their four sons. Brad, the eldest of them and the dairy’s herd manager, explains that his father’s parents emigrated from Holland and started a farm in Iowa, which was relocated to its current location in Luverne in 1969. In the mid-’90s, Brad’s father purchased the farm from his grandfather and began expanding the operation.

Bunker silo, drive-over pile safety precautions can save lives

May 15, 2012
Keith Bolsen
In today’s complex and highly mechanized silage programs, consistently protecting employees, equipment and property throughout harvesting, filling and feeding does not occur without thought, preparation and training. It is better to take steps in advance to eliminate hazards than to rely upon yourself or others to make the correct decision when a hazard is encountered. As Dennis Murphy, extension safety specialist at Penn State University, points out, “We have nothing to lose by practicing safety, but we have everything to lose by not practicing it.”

Repurposed corner: Tire tank

May 4, 2012
Damon Carson
The byproduct of industry: We have had several producers who have come by and are amazed at just how big our mining tire tanks are. So we thought we would include a picture to give you a little perspective on their actual size. This is a 12 feet diameter tire that holds about 1,800 gallons of water. We often get asked, "So why such a large tank?" Often operations have wells that have limited water flow, say, a half gallon per minute. Imagine a herd of 100 cows coming in for their daily drink.

Protecting your business from fraud

May 1, 2012
Craig Bremner

The increasing use of technology brings speed and efficiency to many processes, and business owners are right to leverage it. However, technology also provides opportunities for fraud.

And when times are challenging, fraud increases. In fact, a recent study by the Certified General Accountants Association showed that more than half the businesses operating in Canada today have experienced some form of fraud in the past five years.

Lincoln’s ‘People’s Department’ 150 years later

April 27, 2012
Ben Yale
One year into the Civil War, the Union cause was not going as well as the early swagger had promised. Gen. McClellan failed to take Richmond and gave up an opportunity at Antietam to inflict a heavy blow on the Confederacy. Lincoln had finally given up on his top general and canned him in March of 1862. Meanwhile, General Lee was still a desk general advising Jefferson Davis in Richmond. But on May 15, 1862, while rebel forces at Drewery’s Bluff successfully stopped the Union navy from attacking Richmond via the James River, Abraham Lincoln signed a statute creating the Department of Agriculture.
