Mechanics Corner: Understanding air brake systems

November 18, 2011
Jim Schlund
It is common in the agricultural industry to operate equipment, like semis and ten-wheelers, to carry tons of weight in feed, forages or even to haul manure. It is critical to know how to be able to stop, and stop evenly, while maintaining safe control of the vehicle. In this article, I would like to focus on a subject that plays a key role in the operation of heavy equipment – air brake systems.

New 40th anniversary barn at Taurus Service

November 14, 2011
Taurus Service has recently completed a remodeling and building project at its Mehoopany, Pennsylvania, facilities. The company we recently moved a group of bulls into the 40th Anniversary Barn. Earlier this year, Taurus welcomed EU veterinary officials from Brussels along with U.S. federal veterinarians in their effort to standardize bull stud housing and procedures for EU-qualified A.I. centers in the U.S. A change mandated was that if Taurus was to continue using outside runs for bull housing or exercise, the area had to be concreted so it could be effectively disinfected. Therefore Taurus elected to reduce the 30- by 120-foot outside runs to approximately 30- by 30-foot outside runs and concrete this area. The end result is that Taurus will continue to have outside runs adjoining some bull pens so pens can be alternated to allow bulls to have outside access to sun and exercise.

Extreme makeover: Barn edition

November 1, 2011
Finding labour in Saskatchewan was becoming harder and harder for dairyman Wes Cairns. He decided to take matters into his own hands and control the labour needed for milking his 120 cows. Two years ago, Cairns purchased two robotic milkers and built a new barn to accommodate them.

Cow observations that make you money

October 31, 2011
Neil Michael
Observing cows is nothing new in the dairy business – we all do it every day. But taking some time to critically review a few fundamental cow behaviors on your own operation can have great effects on cow health, performance and the overall attitude of employees within your business. Here are some good areas to watch during your next walk among your cows. Flight zones When you or your employees walk into a pen of cows, how do the cows react to your presence? Do they notice you and head to the opposite end of the pen, or can you walk from one end to the other without a cow taking a step?

Mechanics Corner: A power winch can come in handy

October 31, 2011
A power winch is one of those farm tools that’s handy to have around, especially if you like off-road driving, want to drag pallets or need to pull out a piece of equipment stuck in the mud. Here are a few ins and outs of buying a winch for your four-wheel-drive truck. Three types You may choose a low-voltage winch which runs off 12-volt or 24-volt DC electrical systems; a high-voltage winch which runs off 110-volt AC current; or the hydraulic-only winch, the most heavy-duty for farm jobs.

Web Tools: Dairy producers can be more efficient with SaveEnergy

October 28, 2011
Karen Lee
A collaboration between the Innovation Center for U.S. Dairy and the USDA’s Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) has yielded a new online tool that connects dairy producers to the resources they need to save energy and, in turn, save money on their operations. “This is a great opportunity to show producers how we are using checkoff dollars to join with other organizations and bring information to the table,” says Dan Rice, a dairy producer from Firth, Nebraska.

Mechanics Corner: Takes notes now to avoid costly repairs later

October 11, 2011
Jim Schlund
How’s harvest going for you? With harvest season soon drawing to a close, hopefully you know where you stand with your equipment in terms of repairs and maintenance. For those expecting a late harvest, there will be a big push to get the crop from field to storage, which will not only put pressure on operators and owners, but will also put tremendous pressure on the equipment. This is the time to start refocusing on our record-keeping skills. Although record-keeping is a must year-round, it is very important to pay attention to even the smallest details when working your equipment day in and day out.

Mechanics Corner: Tier 4 Interim technology solutions take different approaches

September 21, 2011
Tim O'Brien
Editor’s note: The second in a two-part series of articles discussing new Tier 4 emissions requirements and technology to meet them. In this article, we’ll take a look at technology solutions manufacturers are employing to achieve Tier 4- mandated emissions reductions. Barn lights: The overlooked expense

September 20, 2011
James Adams
Dairymen and dairywomen tend to lead busy lives. Some piece of equipment is always misbehaving; there is another hole in the fence somewhere, or someone left the gate open again. With this in mind, I have found out what equipment on the dairy is commonly overlooked – the lighting.
