Here’s something we haven’t seen in quite some time: Producer price differentials (PPDs) in all applicable Federal Milk Marketing Orders (FMMOs) were positive in June. Whether it lasts is yet to be determined.

The USDA’s latest World Ag Supply and Demand Estimates (WASDE) report, released July 12, reduced the 2021 milk production forecast slightly but increased expected production in 2022. Price projections were reduced for both years.

While record cheese exports pushed U.S. exports to record heights in April, it was dairy ingredients that drove May volumes to nearly that same record level, according to a monthly update from the U.S. Dairy Export Council (USDEC). On a daily basis, May dairy product exports were the second highest for any month on record.

May milk prices moved higher but feed costs increased even more, ensuring another substantial round of indemnity payments for dairy producers participating in the 2021 Dairy Margin Coverage (DMC) program.

A year ago, dairy farmers were adjusting to COVID-19-related production restrictions and low milk prices by cutting cow numbers and milk production. That’s been reversed and then some.
