Annual milk carton boat race hosted by Dairy Farmers of Oregon draws 85 competitors

Producers, processors and the urban community joined together to celebrate June Dairy Month at the 2012 Dairy Farmers of Oregon Milk Carton Boat Race held Sunday, June 10, at Westmoreland Casting Pond in Portland, Oregon. Competitors paraded their creatively crafted showboats and raced the width of the pond on hand-made boats that floated entirely by milk cartons and milk jugs. The pond was full of unique boats from the yellow brick road and Dorothy in the "Land of Oz" to the bicycle-powered “OS-CAR."

'Cow power' discussed at Pennsylvania Dairy Power Group meeting

June 27, 2012
Individuals representing the public utility commission, the power grid, the Chesapeake Bay Commission and the dairy farm population were all in attendance at the most recent Pennsylvania Dairy Power Stakeholders roundtable discussion. The meeting was held earlier this month and served as a platform for the group to discuss opportunities and obstacles to expanding renewable energy production on Pennsylvania dairy farms.

Dannon and McCarty Family Farms celebrate collaboration

McCarty Family Farms and The Dannon Company announced the initial accomplishments from the first stage of their new and unique collaboration. Milk from the McCarty Family Farms’ dairy cows is now being made into Dannon yogurts at the company’s plant in Fort Worth, Texas. Additionally, a complete carbon footprint analysis of McCarty Family Farms has been completed and provides a benchmark for progress and a guide to future environmental sustainability projects.

Agriculture embraces call for transparency

“We need ethical reflection, not extremism,” renowned author and film maker Shawn Lawrence Otto told the crowd of food and farm industry leaders gathered for the Animal Agriculture Alliance’s 11th annual Stakeholders Summit. Sixteen expert speakers explored the theme “Real Farmers Real Food: Celebrating Tradition and Technology” during the two-day conference held in Arlington, Virginia. Presentations helped attendees ensure authenticity in telling their unique agriculture story and encouraged the entire food chain to unite and embrace innovative consumer outreach efforts.

Industry Honor Roll, June 26: Awards go to Promised Land Dairy, BouMatic, MMPA staff

Promised Land Dairy's digital marketing program recognized with interactive marketing awards The DFW Interactive Marketing Association presented Launch Agency with 2012 Excellence in Interactive Marketing Awards for the agency's digital marketing work on behalf of Promised Land Dairy. The work that Launch did for the Texas-based premium milk distributor won second place for two separate category submissions. Most Effective Online Brand Awareness was judged by the look and feel of website creative as a reflection of the Promised Land Dairy brand. In the Social Media category, Launch designed and utilized a Promised Land Dairy Facebook page to build awareness and track the specific site actions of Store Locator searches and Moo-mail email club signups. —From Launch Agency news release BouMatic receives Governor's Export Award Dairy equipment manufacturer BouMatic, headquartered in Madison, Wisconsin, received the 2012 Governor’s Export Award from Wisconsin Governor Scott Walker at the 48th Annual Wisconsin International Trade Conference.

Colorado students receive 30 percent fewer milks in school

June 26, 2012
A recent analysis of Colorado school milk use conducted by the Western Dairy Association found the average student received only 2.6 milk servings each week, compared to the national average of 3.7 servings. This 30 percent lower level translates into 40 fewer servings of milk each school year – roughly the equivalent of two entire weeks’ worth of recommended calcium intake for students.

Miss Oklahoma visits elementary school with Mobile Dairy Classroom

Betty Thompson, Miss Oklahoma 2011, recently visited Liberty Elementary in Broken Arrow, Oklahoma, with Southwest Dairy Farmers. Thompson – who is an elementary education major at Oklahoma State University and a member of the Dairy Farmers Spokesperson Network – joined Mobile Dairy Classroom instructor Ralph Keel during a presentation to students in kindergarten through third grade.

Organic Valley launches fluid milk product from 100 percent grass-fed cows

Organic Valley Grassmilk is the first refrigerated milk said to be produced from cows that are 100 percent grass-fed. New in the U.S., the product is the innovation of the week from Datamonitor’s Product Launch Analytics. The cows that produce Organic Valley Grassmilk eat only fresh grasses and dried forages, like hay – no soybeans or supplemental grains.
