Equipment demos the focus of North American Manure Expo

The North American Manure Expo is the largest manure equipment demonstration event in the U.S. and Canada. The show combines demonstrations of the latest developments in manure-handling equipment with presentations on the latest research in manure management. Expo 2012 is being held Aug. 22 starting at 7:30 a.m. at the Dairy Forage Research Center located north of Prairie du Sac, Wisconsin. (Click here for more information) The expo is sponsored by the Professional Nutrient Applicators Association of Wisconsin and UW Extension with support from industry agencies and companies.

Minnesota dairy data shows positive performance in 2011

Where is the optimism in the dairy industry? What should the producer hang his or her hat on when the milk price less feed cost goes from over $11 per hundredweight (cwt) to a projected level under $7 per cwt? The future can be projected but the actual situation is not known until the future has arrived. What is known, however, is the financial data that paints a picture of the trends in an individual operation and in a cohort group of similar dairy producers. Looking to the past with financial benchmarking can provide insight into the future, even when the industry is experiencing the stress that exists in 2012.

More than 425 nutritionists and dairy industry professionals gathered in Dubuque, Iowa, June 13 and 14 for the Four-State Dairy Nutrition and Management Conference. The program planning committee consisted of dairy extension faculty from Iowa, Indiana, Minnesota and Wisconsin, and the intention of the conference was to provide timely research information for dairy industry professionals.

Third-party investors help make digesters a reality

It has been said that anaerobic digesters are the future for dairy farms and vice versa. At the same time there are a few issues to overcome to make this future a reality. Hurdles such as investment costs, environmental regulations, interconnect problems and power company negotiations have squashed a fair amount of potential digester projects across the country.

Q&A with a twelfth-generation dairy farmer who was interviewed by FOX CT television for June Dairy Month. Melissa Greenbacker grew up on her family’s dairy, Greenbacker Dairy Farm. Hartford-based television station FOX CT recently invited her into the studio for a live interview. How did your interview with FOX CT come about? I was invited by someone from the TV station to come in to the studio for a live interview to talk about June being National Dairy month. I had about 24 hours notice.

Coke and Pepsi both add dairy to product lines

Coca-Cola and PepsiCo Inc. have both added dairy products to their consumer offerings recently, no doubt hoping to tap into the market of consumers who are aiming to eat healthier. Coke's Core Power Coca-Cola is now distributing a dairy-based "sports recovery" beverage called Core Power. The "natural high-protein milkshake" by Fair Oaks Farms Brands is endorsed by triathletes and is part of an exploding category of beverages that are said to boost performance during workouts and muscle recovery afterward.

Sorrento cheese plant strike resolved quickly

More than 250 Sorrento Lactalis production and maintenance employees are back on the job after a two-day strike that started July 9 outside the Buffalo, New York, cheese plant. The employees that went on strike are members of the Teamsters Local Union No. 264, International Brotherhood of Teamsters, from Cheektowaga, New York. The issue was inferior terms for health care coverage.
