Soy-based livestock insecticide to be tested on farms this summer

A company using soybean oil to replace petroleum-based toner in printer cartridges will test its latest soy-based replacement product this summer on U.S. livestock operations. SoyPrint's new soy-based insecticide is made from 95 percent soy products at various stages of refinement and is non-toxic and not harmful to livestock. It kills with effectiveness most exoskeleton insects that come in contact with it.

Katie Wirkus of Athens, Wisconsin, was selected as the state’s 64th Alice in Dairyland. Wirkus was selected from five finalists for the full-time public relations position at the Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection (DATCP).

Know Farming, Know Beef

“Know Farming, Know Beef” was the theme of the checkoff’s Northeast Beef Promotion Initiative (NEBPI) 2011 Beef Boot Camp. The one and a half day conference was held in Hadley and Hatfield, Massachusetts, May 10 and 11. A total of 46 retail meat buyers, managers and directors participated in the event, the highest boot camp attendance for the NEBPI program to date. Retailers came from Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, Massachusetts, Connecticut and Pennsylvania.

Wisconsin Governor Scott Walker presented the annual Export Achievement Awards on May 10 to recognize firms and organizations that have achieved extraordinary results in international sales or have contributed to Wisconsin's increased ability to compete in a global market. Walker says the companies serve as excellent examples of how to succeed in international markets, and proved they could prosper despite the ups and downs of the global economy.

Holstein Association USA announces 2011 Herds of Excellence

Holstein Association USA is proud to announce nine U.S Registered Holstein herds that have qualified for the 2011 Herd of Excellence recognition. These herds have all achieved the rigorous criteria to qualify for this honor, as follows: must be 25 percent above breed average Mature Equivalent (ME) for milk, fat, and protein; must have classified within the last year and have an actual average classification score of 83 points or higher; must have at least 70 percent of the herd homebred; and must be enrolled in the Association’s TriStar program.

Estimating the impact of DMSP on 2009 margins: An apple-to-apple-to-orange comparison

Though dairy producers would like to forget 2009, it’s still the center of attention when talking about reforming dairy policy. The severity of depressed milk prices and feed margins in 2009 makes it the extreme case study to test just how intrusive a proposed supply management program would be for U.S. producers. Since the beginning of the year, three different reports have been released analyzing the effect of the Dairy Market Stabilization Program (DMSP) on producers in 2009.
