Eight bovine veterinary students from across the U.S. each received $1,500 awards and all-expenses-paid trips to the American Association of Bovine Practitioners (AABP) annual conference in Albuquerque, New Mexico, Aug. 18-21. Intervet/Schering-Plough Animal Health sponsored the Bovine Veterinary Student Recognition Awards Program and recognized the students Aug. 19.

The 400 kWh CHP system will be installed in Lynden, Washington, about 95 miles north of Seattle. It is scheduled to be installed in late 2010. Lynden-based DARITECH Inc. will build the anaerobic digester, and the Van Dyk Dairy Farm owns and operates the biogas plant.
The plant is expected to produce 4706 MW of thermal energy and 3320 MW of electricity per year, with any excess power sold to the grid. The combined heat and power plant uses the 2G agenitor, a thermodynamically optimized MAN cogeneration gas engine coupled with the patented 2G-Drive technology, especially developed for biogas operations. Benefits over conventional MAN, or any other gas engine, include much higher efficiencies, extended life and less maintenance cost.
AntelBio’s expertise in developing milk sample diagnostic tests was key in the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s recent decision to award a Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) Phase I grant. The funding will be used to investigate novel Bovine Tuberculosis (bTB) detection methods in bulk milk samples. With new clinical bTB cases emerging in cattle in a number of states; and control and eradication programs running in the millions of dollars, identifying new cost effective screening methods would be a tremendous benefit.

Each recipient will receive $2,500 towards their education, encouraging them to enter the field of organic agriculture. DeLaval announced it has hit the 30,000 sales mark for its swinging cow brush, a self-grooming device that keeps cows happier, healthier and more productive. “The swinging cow brush is very popular among dairy farmers thanks to its many customer benefits. Definitely a DeLaval success story,” DeLaval Vice President Business Area Aftermarket & Services Tim Nicolaï said.
Exactly two years after first breaking ground on a $62 million expansion, The Michigan Milk Producers Association (MMPA) hosted an Open House on June 30 to showcase its newly renovated and expanded processing facility. The dairy manufacturing plant operates 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, taking in approximately 3.5 to 5 million pounds of milk each day. Sales from the Ovid plant were nearly $140 million in 2009.

Every year as a way of encouraging continued involvement in the dairy industry, Dairy MAX, the local dairy council, provides scholarships to regional students who have dairy background, studying an agricultural-related field and have outstanding scholastic achievements, leadership abilities and community involvement. This year Dairy MAX is proud to award two $2,500 scholarships to Dianne DeVos, Plainview, Texas, and Justin Squire, Hagerman, New Mexico.
