What dairy can learn from our veal customers

In this month’s column, usually written by Executive Director John Frey, the Center for Dairy Excellence invited summer intern Rebecca Shaw to share what she learned during a recent visit to the Marcho Farms facility. The operation is based in Franconia, Pennsylvania, and processes more than 1,500 veal calves a week. Center staff visited the facility with the intention of learning more about the veal industry and the connection between the veal and dairy industries. As an intern at the Center for Dairy Excellence, I have the opportunity to engage in the dairy industry at many levels – from visiting local dairy farms to talking with state legislators to engaging in meetings with stakeholders from all facets of the industry.

Feeding America joins with National Dairy Council and the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics

Feeding America has joined with National Dairy Council and the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics to identify game-changing innovations in the field of nutrition and food security. With a commitment of $1.8 million over two years, National Dairy Council will take a leadership role in bringing together this unique effort between three organizations to help to eliminate hunger and promote healthy food choices. “The work of National Dairy Council has focused on nutrition research, education and communication for nearly a century to encourage healthy eating patterns and lifestyles," said Jean Ragalie, president of National Dairy Council.

Dairy organizations applaud Senate step forward on U.S.-Russia trade relations

June 18, 2012
The National Milk Producers Federation (NMPF) and the U.S. Dairy Export Council (USDEC) applauded the introduction of legislation to extend Permanent Normal Trade Relations (PNTR) to Russia. Senator Baucus (MT), Finance Committee Chairman; Senator John Thune (SD), International Trade Subcommittee Ranking Member; Senator John Kerry (MA), Foreign Relations Committee Chairman; and Senator John McCain (AZ), Armed Services Committee Ranking Member, introduced the bipartisan legislation in order to enable U.S. companies to expand exports to Russia when it joins the World Trade Organization (WTO) this year. Russia is expected to complete the necessary administrative and regulatory changes and thereafter to actively join the WTO this August.

More than 1,200 people attend Michigan's Dairy Day at the Capitol

June 18, 2012
Dairy processors, producers and industry representatives were joined by more than 1,200 attendees and government officials at Dairy Day at the Capitol held June 12 at the State Capitol in Lansing, Michigan. Michigan Governor Rick Snyder proclaimed the day as Dairy Day in Michigan to officially celebrate the state’s $5.9 billion dairy industry and recognize its farmers’ and processors’ commitment to healthy people, healthy communities and a healthy planet.

Delegation tours state-of-the-art Madison dairy featuring robotic milking units and dairy waterbeds

The Latino Chamber of Commerce of Dane County and Advanced Comfort Technology (ACT, Inc.), the Wisconsin-based company home of Dual Chamber Cow Waterbeds (DCC Waterbeds), hosted a group of 13 community leaders from Tepatitlan, Mexico, at the state-of-the art Laufenberg Farms. The leaders' visit to the Waunakee dairy farm was part of an Official Visit by the Mexican delegation to the City of Madison, part of the Madison/Tepatitlan Sister City Program.

Record attendance at Cows on the Concourse

June 18, 2012
Cows on the Concourse brought consumers and cows face-to-face in Madison, Wisconsin, on Saturday June 2. This year, a record number of families took part in the annual tradition, which serves as the official kick off of June Dairy Month in Dane County. Cows on the Concourse took place on the Capitol Square in downtown Madison, where the Dane County Farmers’ Market also connects consumers with farmers.

Building the bridge to dairy transitions

The Center for Dairy Excellence recently hosted Train The Trainer, a two-day program titled Building the Bridge to Dairy Transition. Participants included employees from a number of different fields that wished to enhance their existing succession and transition facilitation skills. Attendees listened to six speakers covering topics such as family businesses, financial planning and insurance, dairy transition planning, legal considerations and accounting.
