Governor Cuomo announces aid for New York's storm-hit farms

April 10, 2012
Governor Andrew Cuomo recently announced that an additional $1 million in recovery aid will be provided to New York farms that were affected by Hurricane Irene and Tropical Storm Lee. These funds are Round 2 of the Farm Operation Match Component of the Agriculture and Community Recovery Fund (ACRF). Grants will go to 97 farms in 18 counties to help replace feed and crops that were damaged by Irene or Lee. The first round of grants awarded $1.3 million to 143 farms in 21 counties.

Industry news for Canada, April 10

April 10, 2012
New DuPont Acapela fungicide receives PMRA registration The Pesticide Management Regulatory Agency (PMRA) in Canada has granted approval for registration for DuPont Acapela fungicide. Acapela is a flexible fungicide with a new active ingredient that employs unique movement properties to fit the way producers farm. It controls key leaf diseases, allowing growers to achieve higher yields in cereals, corn, soybeans and pulse crops. "Acapela has unique movement properties that differentiate it from other fungicides," says Dave Kloppenburg, fungicide launch manager for DuPont. "It moves across the waxy layer of the leaf surface and systemically within leaf tissues."

Vi-COR and Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada research sheds new light on fighting sudden death in dairy cattle

April 9, 2012
Recent research published in BMC Research Notes (Baines et. al. 2011, 4:110) studied the effects of Celmanax Liquid on etiologic agents of Hemorrhagic Bowel Syndrome (HBS) in dairy cattle. This disease is also known as Jejunal Hemorrhagic Syndrome (JHS), acute hemorrhagic enteritis of the small intestine and bloody gut. It is characterized by large blood clots in the intestine that result in severe enlargement of the bowel, eventual blockage and sudden death.

Beyond averages: Finding the right number

April 9, 2012
Ben Yale
The national morning news reports the NBA scores from the night before and the weather for the day. “Last night in the NBA the score was 1904. Half of the teams won with average scores of 98 to 92. "Meanwhile today’s weather will average 50 degrees across the country and there will be clouds and sunshine at least somewhere.” So did your team win? Is this a day for the Cartwrights or shorts and a T-shirt? If you are in southern Arizona, the latter might work but what about Bayfield County, Wisconsin, or in eastern New York or in the Yakima Valley?

It’s your ship, so be the captain

April 9, 2012
Tom Wall
You’ve heard the saying: “The captain goes down with the ship,” right? But with all of the safety standards and regulations that exist today, did you ever think that this concept would actually apply to a situation in your lifetime? Until recently, I never thought it would. But all of that changed when the Italian cruise ship Costa Concordia ran ashore and capsized a few months ago. As of this writing, 30 bodies have been recovered, two people are still missing and the cruise liner’s captain, Francesco Schettino, remains under house arrest.

How to use three types of feedback to improve performance

April 9, 2012
Bob Milligan
Each and every one of us wants and needs feedback, often dreads receiving feedback and is frequently uncomfortable giving feedback. Few of us really understand feedback or manage the process of providing feedback. This column will assist you in selecting the appropriate performance consequence. We begin with a definition of feedback from dictionary.com: “The return of information about the result of a process or activity; an evaluative response.” We constantly give and receive feedback, if not explicitly, then implicitly.

Q2 opportunities gone but others still available in late 2012

April 9, 2012
Chip Whalen
Dairy producer profitability deteriorated sharply over the past few months as milk prices plummeted while feed costs increased. Where the market was projecting a positive margin for nearby Q2 at the beginning of the year, the open market margin for that period is now negative. Moreover, the projected profitability has moved from a very high historical value above the 90th percentile of the past 10 years to below the 10th percentile between mid-January and early March – a nearly $4-per-hundredweight (cwt) drop.

If it’s not management, what is it?

April 9, 2012
Greg Squires
During the first half of my career, I worked as a dairy nutritionist primarily in Ohio and the eastern Corn Belt, and believe that experience has greatly improved my ability to consult in the business and financial side of dairy operations. I now occasionally have the opportunity to work with my former nutrition clients and am reminded of a conversation that took place many years ago. I walked into the office of one of my prospective nutrition clients for an appointment and found him very agitated. The conversation went something like this: DAIRYMAN: Greg, it may not be a good day for us to talk.
