The Minnesota Board of Animal Health today announced that the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) has approved Minnesota’s application for statewide bovine Tuberculosis (TB) Free status, effective October 4, 2011. The approval comes six years after the discovery of an infected beef herd in July 2005.
In recent years, status downgrades have been the cause of increased testing and movement requirements for Minnesota cattle, both in-state and out. With U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) approval, the status upgrade will bring relief to most Minnesota cattle producers.
Animal Welfare Approved announces the opening of the first Animal Welfare Approved Restaurant, Grazin', in Hudson, New York. Grazin' is the first restaurant in the U.S. using only Animal Welfare Approved meat, eggs and dairy products.
Restaurants can only earn the distinction of being an "Animal Welfare Approved Restaurant" if all meat, dairy and egg products are from Animal Welfare Approved farms.
President Barack Obama has submitted to Congress three pending free trade agreements (FTAs) with South Korea, Panama and Colombia. The dairy industry, including DFA, has urged for the passage of these FTAs for several years.
The U.S. dairy sector is expected to see significant gains from each of these agreements, particularly the FTA with South Korea.

World Dairy Expo brings the best cows and genetics to Madison, Wisconsin, each year. Throughout the week, five breed sales were held in the Estrumate Sale Pavilion and one on the colored shavings in the Coliseum.
Calf raising tips, tricks and critical steps that can make a big difference on your dairy will be shared at two upcoming one-day Calf Care Workshops: Wednesday, Oct. 19, Marshfield, and Thursday, Oct. 20, Arlington. Developed by dairy producers for dairy producers, the workshops are for calf managers and caregivers who want to take their calf-raising capabilities to the next level.
The hands-on workshops will focus on raising healthy, content calves. Calf raiser Minnie Ward will kick off the workshop with “Get Calf Savvy – Latest Research and Information,” and focus on three important calf care areas: automated calf feeders, colostrums and ventilation.
Holstein Association USA is currently seeking applicants for a new communications & youth programs summer internship. The internship will be based out of the Association’s headquarters in scenic Brattleboro, Vermont, and provide valuable hands-on experience, networking opportunities and personal development to help students prepare for future careers in the dairy industry.
Intern responsibilities will involve assisting with various communications projects and youth programs, including preparations for the National Holstein Convention. Specific tasks will include writing press releases, developing video presentations, preparing information for distribution to the media, photography, videography, feature story writing, working with the Holstein Foundation’s Dairy Jeopardy and Dairy Bowl programs, and a member relations project. The internship will include opportunities for some travel, including attending the 2012 National Holstein Convention in Springfield, Missouri.
In recognition of his commitment to the animal-health industry and for inspiring students and others in veterinary medicine, Jenks Britt, D.V.M., D.A.B.V.P., Western Kentucky University Department of Agriculture professor, received the Mentor of the Year Award from the American Association of Bovine Practitioners (AABP) and Merck Animal Health.
The Mentor of the Year Award honors individuals who have dedicated their careers to educating, mentoring and advancing the careers of students in the field of bovine veterinary medicine. Britt was honored with a commemorative plaque during the AABP annual meeting Sept. 22-24 in St. Louis. He also will receive an all-expenses-paid trip to next year’s AABP conference in Montreal.
