I am once again working overseas on a food security mission, this time in Egypt. Here is my first of three installments about this country.

The biggest ice cream sundae in history was made in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, in 1988, and weighed in at more than 24 tons. You can’t order that in an ice cream parlor!
In 2003, Portland, Oregon bought more ice cream per person than any other U.S. city. Looks like everyone else has a lot of catching up to do!
The ice cream cone’s invention is linked to the 1904 World’s Fair in St. Louis. An ice cream vendor reportedly didn’t have enough dishes to keep up with the demand, so he teamed up with a waffle vendor who rolled his waffles into cones! PD

Storage of cow manure is a common practice on dairy farms. Each additional installation of a manure pit increases the probability that a fatal accident will result.
Tragically, experiences in several states indicate that when an accident does occur, it is likely to involve two or three fatalities. Also, there have been several cases of large numbers of livestock perishing due to manure gases.

It’s June. I suppose, since I’m involved in the dairy industry, it should be the most fun month of the year. Don’t get me wrong – I’ve been known to throw candy at a parade or two, maybe participate in an ice cream social.
Mostly, though, I avoid it. I’ve been avoiding a lot of things lately. Turned off my Facebook for a day this week. That’s a big deal for me.
I find it especially annoying when someone tells me to consider myself lucky and then names a far-away country they know little about. (While I hope, growing up, I had sufficient empathy for the children of Mozambique, I was able to realize that whether or not I finished my vegetables was disconnected from their fate).
