Some kids look forward to a summer filled with boating, camping and family vacations but, like many farm kids, the highlight of my summer as a kid was the county fair.
The field is wide open, boundary lines crisscross the green, and light floods the stadium. There a breathless moment while the flag is hoisted into the blue, and the majestic notes of “The Star-Spangled Banner” ring and then fade. Suddenly, with a tumultuous roar from the stands, two teams bouncing with energy bound on to the field.
In hindsight, I could have avoided being kidnapped.
He seemed to be about the same age I was at the time. He had a shaved head, suspenders over a white shirt, and tattoos on his neck and arms. People tried to avoid him, and those that didn’t he asked, in a gruff voice, if they had a fag (cigarette).

Yesterday I watched my daughter, Angel, ride her horse. She didn’t have a saddle, only a bridle in her hands. The horse galloped and slowed with a slight pressure from her knees and the lift of her hand on the bridle. The horse and rider were one as they flew across the pasture.
He was a man in his 50s, his long braids swinging quietly between his shoulder blades as he pedaled. He moved patiently on an old white bicycle with a ratty flannel jacket and other clothes like it draped over the handlebars and strapped down on the back.

Donning red shirts from Progressive Dairyman and showing their passion for dairy, 52 students from 24 universities, 20 states and five countries gathered at Curry County Fairgrounds for the evening meal and to hear from their “genetics week” instructor on how their morning linear appraisal of 10 heifers compared to the genomic testing done previously by Zoetis at Doug and Irene Handley’s Do-Rene Dairy, Clovis, New Mexico.
