As this goes to print, a highly anticipated time of the year for many has come around again: hunting season. When I’m asked to describe western New York, I tell the person it’s hills and deer hunting. We don’t have the big white-tail racks found in the Corn Belt, but a mix of fields and woods supports a strong regional herd.

Why must they have elections two weeks before Thanksgiving? It’s what I like to call the fuse that starts the argument at Thanksgiving dinner. One rule about voting: Do it. That’s it. You have now received Tim Moffett’s entire political wisdom.

The planning process requires a lot of effort. I often say or write that if we have one hour to plan, then 55 minutes is committed to inventory, evaluation and developing options. The options or alternatives provide the landowner with choices.

As the trees lose their leaves here in northeast Wisconsin, it is clear that the fall season is here to stay. Looking back over the past few months, you may be asking yourself the same question as I am: Where did the summer go?

As I write, it is only two weeks until I turn 30. Although I’ve known it was coming for a while, only now, seeing it in print, do I realize what a large sum the number contains. Although it is a common and predictable angst shared by all of humanity that makes it this far, that does not lessen its totality.

In the last few articles, I have focused on “burning boats” at the beginning of marriage, leaving no escape routes. I have written about burning boats and building new ones. There is one more sealer that must be put on new boats to keep them floating in the turbulent waters of adversity where every marriage must float.

To the Progressive Publishing team, it feels like the beginning of a new year. Our staff was hard at work over the summer, finalizing issue dates, establishing deadlines and discussing plans for 2015. We held our annual company meeting at the end of August to analyze the past year and take note of improvement areas.

Recently, I completed a 12-week cardiac rehabilitation program. A part of the program is nutrition education – what I should eat and not eat to prevent heart disease and maintain a healthy heart. Among the program’s nutrition recommendations are: if you drink milk, drink 1 percent or skim; better yet, replace cow’s milk with an almond or soy beverage (I cannot call it milk); stay away from butter; yogurt should be non-fat; cheese should be lower-fat varieties; and try to stay away from ice cream, but if you do eat ice cream limit the indulgence to one scoop and not very often.
