Jessica Engel

Job title: Dairy specialist
Company: Vita Plus

What education are you bringing with you to this position?

I have a Master of Science degree in animal science with a dairy nutrition focus from the University of Minnesota; I worked with Dr. Hans Jung and Dr. Jim Linn and evaluated in vitro fiber digestibility of forages and high-fiber byproduct feeds. I attended the University of Wisconsin – River Falls for my undergraduate studies and have a bachelor’s degree in animal science (dairy emphasis).

Please describe your agricultural background.

I grew up on a dairy farm in northeast Wisconsin. As a typical farm kid, I helped with everyday barn chores including feeding calves, milking cows and everything in between. I loved being around cows and always had one or two favorite ones in the barn. I had initial aspirations of becoming a large-animal veterinarian but changed my trajectory with the help of my undergraduate adviser after taking an introductory dairy nutrition course. My husband and I currently raise show heifers that our children exhibit at local shows and fairs.

What territory will you cover?

I will work in eastern and central Wisconsin.

What are your new responsibilities?

I will provide nutrition consulting, ration balancing and management expertise to dairy producers, as well as utilize the company’s technical services team to provide tailored support for clients.

What previous positions have you held?

Most recently, I worked as a dairy nutrition consultant within the industry. Prior to that, I was the herd manager for my family’s 2,000-cow dairy in northeast Wisconsin.

Who has made the biggest impact on your career?

There have been multiple individuals who have impacted my career, but I would like to acknowledge all the dairy producers I have had the privilege of working with over the years. Every farm is different and unique, and as a consultant, I learned how to adapt my approach for each customer, regardless of herd size. I applaud their dedication and hard work to help feed the world.

How will you be of most help to producers in your region or area of expertise?

With my extensive herd and farm management experience, I can better relate to dairy producers. There is only so much a book or computer can tell you. Having practical, real-world knowledge is valuable to provide effective solutions on-farm.

Why did you choose this company?

I chose Vita Plus for the company culture, camaraderie and how they serve and value their customers.

What goals would you like to accomplish while in this position?

The dairy industry is constantly evolving, and as a consultant, I want to stay up-to-date with new advancements and technologies to best serve my clients well into the future.
