Dairy producers find their ‘Pathways to Profit’

In today’s volatile marketplace, profit remains, but finding a way to it can be much more difficult than before. At its annual business conference this March, the Professional Dairy Producers of Wisconsin paved a course to set its members on their own “Pathways to Profit.” In a pre-conference breakout session, a business coach and two dairy producers joined forces to help others find their own path during difficult economic times. Dr. David Kohl, business coach and president of AgriVisions LLC, said the key to finding profit is to manage revenues, inputs and interest rates and to find a balance amongst all three.

Attendance and optimism rebound at 2011 WDMC in Reno

The biennial Western Dairy Management Conference looked and sounded much different than the last time the meeting convened in Reno, Nevada, in 2009 – both in the number of participants and the tone of presentations. Attendance was up about 6 percent this year. And more of the 2011 presentations were optimistic about producer profitability and opportunities in the future.

Dairy Production Systems honored at Florida Dairy Production Conference

This article was originally printed in the April 2011 issue of The DPS Moosletter. The 47th Annual Florida Dairy Production Conference was held at the Best Western Gateway Grand in Gainesville, Florida, March 30. The conference was sponsored by the Department of Animal Sciences at the University of Florida, Florida Cooperative Extension Service and the Agricultural Experiment Station of the Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences. Dairy industry speakers from Florida to New York spoke on various issues and topics ranging from animal health/reproduction to the state of the dairy economy and dairy lending. Topics were focused on the southeastern United States.

Maryland & Virginia reports strong financial position

Maryland & Virginia Milk Producers Cooperative announced $8.7 million in earnings from 2010 operations at its 91st Annual Business Meeting held March 29 in Asheville, North Carolina, and continued March 31, in Ellicott City, Maryland. Reported as the second best year in recent history, Maryland & Virginia credits stewardship for the cooperative’s tremendous success.

New CDFA Secretary Ross hails ‘great partnership’ with California dairy families at WUD convention

Newly appointed California Department of Food and Agriculture Secretary Karen Ross hailed a "great partnership with the California dairy industry that has been proactive and forward looking in how we address critical environmental issues so you can stay in business." Ross delivered her remarks Thursday, March 17, at Western United Dairymen’s annual convention in Visalia. Ross’ upbeat comments set the tone for the convention as California dairy families set their sights on the future following two years of low milk prices coupled with feed costs that have caused severe economic distress to the California dairy industry.

Around 200 people gathered together for the Midwest Manure Summit held in Green Bay, Wisconsin, last month. Fresh off a Superbowl win, Packer fans were eager to get a glimpse of the Lombardi Trophy as they convened for this bi-annual event at Lambeau Field.
