Co-ops will soon explain milk quality rule changes to members

February 8, 2012
Walt Cooley
Dairy co-ops throughout the country have, or will soon have, communicated to dairy producers how a recently announced USDA agreement with the E.U. for individual farm testing of somatic cell counts (SCC) will impact them in upcoming months. In Nov. 2011, the USDA notified the industry of a new E.U. health certification program required for all dairy products and dairy ingredients being exported to E.U. nations. In short, the key element of the new program is individual farm testing of SCCs and calculation of a farm’s three-month rolling geometric mean, which must be less than 400,000 SCCs per mL to certify for export to the E.U.

The average change among the 1,879 bulls industrywide over the same time period was a $22 decrease.

2012 World Ag Expo: Editor’s picks for things to do

February 6, 2012
Walt Cooley
It’s World Ag Expo time again. As is tradition, here’s a preview of the top three reasons I’m looking forward to attending this year’s show. 1. Dairy seminars This will be the first year Progressive Dairyman has hosted seminars at World Ag Expo. When we began planning the seminars last fall, I thought we had a solid lineup. But as I’ve spent time individually with some of the presenters, I’ve grown increasingly excited to see their presentations live. I’m perhaps most excited about the virtual tours. Two eager dairy producers will talk about the experiences that have shaped them in recent years.
