In today’s marketplace, where consumers demand transparency and accountability in their food sources, third-party verification often creates confusion simply because of a lack of understanding of what these programs are and their intentions. This uncertainty can lead to questions about the value of these processes in the food supply chain.
Since 1995, Where Food Comes From has recognized that trust and value are at the foundation of strong relationships between producers and consumers. Today, we’ll dive into how third-party verification programs enhance credibility, market access and consumer confidence in beef production.
First impressions of verification
For many ranchers, the initial introduction into verification and value-added programs can be daunting. Common feelings include apprehension about the complexity of the processes and concerns about the costs involved, as well as simply not thinking they should have to participate in such a program.
The best part? They don’t have to participate! The truth? Verification is voluntary, but it’s also valuable. And fortunately, many ranchers find that long-term benefits, such as enhanced marketability and consumer trust, outweigh these initial doubts. The majority have come to say that while they did not want to have to participate, they understand the importance of communicating their story and their efforts throughout the supply chain so a consumer can have a trusted source into the claims they read on food labels. Once they take a step back and consider who the product is going to, which is someone they have never met and someone that has never met them, they get it.
Key verification programs for ranchers
Ranchers have access to several key verification and certification programs, each designed to address specific aspects of livestock production and meet market expectations:
- Source & Age Verification (SAV): This is the foundation of all verification programs. SAV confirms the origin and age of cattle, critical for export eligibility and consumer trust.
- Product of the USA: (New in 2025) Specific to labeling, the new “Product of the USA” label can be used to promote that beef was born, raised, slaughtered and processed in the U.S. To qualify, you must be source approved.
- Non-Hormone Treated Cattle (NHTC): Verifies cattle were raised without hormonal growth promotants.
- Verified Natural Beef (VNB): Guarantees cattle are raised without antibiotics or hormones (includes NHTC requirements).
- RaiseWell Certified: New for 2026, this verification combines rigorous animal welfare requirements with verified natural practices. RaiseWell meets the needs of premium meat programs and natural retailers that require documented production practices related to animal welfare and antibiotic and hormone use. I highly recommend bundling RaiseWell with CARE Certified to gain premium market access.
- CARE Certified: Focused animal care, environmental stewardship and people and community support creating a holistic, sustainability-driven program that allows brands and retailers to achieve the sustainability goals they are committing to within their organizations. This certification allows producers to communicate their story and their own commitments via the CARE Certified label as well.
When determining which verification programs are most relevant, ranchers should consider their buyers, their market goals, consumer demands and long-term business objectives. Many ranchers find that bundling programs increases both efficiency and marketability.

The value of verification
Real-world impact
Verification programs often result in tangible financial and market benefits. Ranchers participating in third-party verification programs like CARE Certified, VNB and others frequently earn premium pricing, due to consumers being willing to pay more for verified claims related to animal welfare, sustainability, raised in the USA and more.
The 2024 power of meat report showed that 39% of consumers seek animal welfare claims on beef products, while 43% look for raised in the USA claims. More recent data from the 2025 power of meat report showed that around 50% of consumers believe they would purchase more meat and poultry at retail if they had more certainty about raising and sourcing standards, while nearly 60% believe they would buy more meat and poultry if their department had animal welfare ratings providing greater insight into production standards.
Consumers consistently view verified and certified beef as more trustworthy than nonverified products. This directly impacts a rancher’s marketability, brand loyalty and price premiums. In fact, Where Food Comes From’s 2025 end-of-year premiums resulted in a total of $88 per head, representing 275,000 head across 2,200 video sale lots, representing more than $24.2 million in total producer premiums earned throughout the year.
What does this mean in today’s market? It means that even in a historic market, premiums were positively impacted in a significant way, proving verification and value-added programs continue to pay off. And, beyond pricing, verified operations continue to benefit from stronger recognition and long-term customer/buyer loyalty. Consistency pays off year after year!
Program integration and bundling
Ranchers can bundle multiple value-added programs into their operations by adopting a strategic approach that prioritizes resources and allows for approval across various verification programs. Most importantly, bundling saves you time and money while enhancing your marketability.
Buyers who are procuring cattle for natural retailers and export markets may be seeking a bundling option that looks something like this: SAV, Product of the USA, NHTC, VNB, RaiseWell and CARE Certified. This combination allows your cattle to fit seamlessly into multiple markets, giving buyers the utmost flexibility.
The future of verification
Simplifying the process, building trust
As the food industry evolves, the landscape of verification and value-added programs is expected to change. Technologies like electronic ID (e-ID) tags and digital traceability dashboards now streamline the third-party verification process the entire way through pre-audit, postaudit and even renewal, allowing ranchers to focus more on production and less on paperwork. These advancements, like e-ID tags and our own Beef Passport dashboard, revolutionize how verification is conducted, making it more accessible and efficient for producers.
Moving forward with innovation
The goal of every producer should be to make their operation stand out in an increasingly competitive beef market. By demystifying verification and value-added programs, we aim to empower ranchers to confidently convey their commitment to quality, sustainability and animal care. Together, we can turn confusion into clarity and build a more transparent and trusted food system.
