The Charles and Mary Ann Goodnight Ranch State Historic Site

Charles Goodnight, cattleman and entrepreneur, established the Goodnight-Loving Trail and experimented with crossbreeding Hereford and Angus cattle. His wife, Mary Ann “Molly” Goodnight, known as “Mother of the Panhandle,” was a teacher and later a rancher, who supported cowboys and established a bison herd. Descendants of that herd live in the Caprock Canyons State Park, Quitaque, Texas.

Gilda V. Bryant

Charles Goodnight came to Texas as a young boy and immediately started working with livestock. As a young man, he established the Goodnight-Loving Trail with his friend Oliver Loving. Together, they moved cattle from Texas to Pueblo, Colorado.

Proper vaccine handling: Key to effective disease prevention

Vaccines represent important tools in our preventive health programs. But as with any tools, we need to make sure we care for and use them properly for maximum effectiveness and benefit. Failure to handle vaccines correctly may jeopardize their efficacy and even safety, resulting in wasted time and money.
August 6, 2025
Randy Shirbroun

To minimize the economic impact of infectious disease in our cattle, it is important that we work together with our veterinarian to develop well-designed preventive health programs. Essential components of those programs are the vaccines we select and the schedule we utilize.

A difference between dairy cows and beef cattle

August 5, 2025
Erica Louder

The Jersey cow was the topic of a particularly inane conversation I was having at a casual work dinner. Then, it turned a little more interesting. I should say, it turned on me, and that’s what made it more interesting.

To treat or not to treat: Setting antibiotic re-treatment intervals benefits calves and producers

It is important to stick to an antibiotic’s set post-treatment interval (PTI) and not treat too early. They are critical to antibiotic efficacy, animal welfare and operational efficiency, improving success without compromising animal health.
August 4, 2025
Abigail George

To treat or not to treat? That’s the question producers often face when it comes to re-treating sick calves. It's hard to treat a calf for respiratory disease and not see immediate results.
