New Mexico leads in per-cow production

No state in the nation has squeezed more milk out of its dairy cows in the past three years than New Mexico. Producers got nearly 25,000 pounds out of each cow in 2011. What’s the secret? A combination of favorable weather, modern dairy facilities and aggressive culling appears to be helping producers get the most out of every cow. Cow comfort is an important consideration whenever new dairies are built, and New Mexico has seen several large new dairies constructed in the past 12 years, says dairyman Luke Woelber of Belen, New Mexico, who is president of Dairy Producers of New Mexico.

If agriculture and Puerto Rico appear in the same sentence, most people would think of sugar cane, bananas or other tropical fruits. Yet, the dairy industry in Puerto Rico represents 25 percent of the island’s total agricultural-related income at more than $215 million dollars annually. Milk production is the single-biggest sector of Puerto Rico’s ag economy.

Oregon and California dairy workers join Teamsters

August 6, 2012
Dairy workers with YoCream International Inc., a division of global French food group Danone SA, voted overwhelmingly to join Teamsters Local 305 in Portland, Oregon. “We’re very satisfied that we are getting representation from the Teamsters because the Teamsters represent almost all of the dairies in our area,” said Christopher Greenlee, a lead pasteurizer and one of the 45 new Teamster members at YoCream. “We organized to improve our pay, have better communication with the company and have a say in our work rules.”
