Maryland & Virginia announces record earnings

April 1, 2010
Maryland & Virginia Milk Producers Cooperative celebrated its 90th year of operation with record earnings of $14.5 million and reaffirmed its mission to maximize returns to members. CEO Jay Bryant announced the year-end results at the Annual Meeting held in Ellicott City, Maryland, on March 26 and continued on March 30 in Asheville, North Carolina.

DCHA Conference provides latest information on raising replacements

The Dairy Calf & Heifer Association’s annual conference wrapped up on March 25. By all accounts, it was a very successful meeting and trade show. More than 300 growers, producers, veterinarians, academia, and dairy industry representatives attended the conference March 23-25 in Lexington, Kentucky.

Southwest Kansas Dairy Tour highlights three dairies

April 1, 2010
The Kansas Department of Commerce and the western Kansas Rural Economic Development Alliance (wKREDA) hosted a day-long bus tour, designed to showcase Kansas as an ideal location for dairy farmers. About 25 dairy producers attended the tour and came from a variety of locations, including Kansas, Tennessee, Virginia and Saudi Arabia.

New York producers voice concerns over dairy crisis

March 31, 2010
Assistant Attorney General Christine Varney met with New York dairy producers this week to discuss the lack of competition and unfair milk prices. The forum, held in Batavia, New York, drew about 200 people. Although Varney spent most of the meeting listening to about 25 dairy farmers and industry officials, she said her sector of the government was aware of the problem.

Wisconsin committee approves raw milk bill

March 31, 2010
A bill that would allow farmers to sell raw, unpasteurized milk directly to consumers has moved out of an Assembly committee. The Rural Economic Development Committee approved the bill 8-1. The move clears the way for a vote in the full Assembly.

Dairy equity drops $1.8 billion in Wisconsin

March 22, 2010
As the dairy industry suffered a huge economic blow in 2009, so did Wisconsin’s agriculture industry. Total receipts from the state’s farm marketings dropped by an estimated $1.8 billion (18 percent) in 2009, with nearly 80 percent of that decline resulting from much smaller milk checks. Coincidently, the equity of the state’s dairy industry also fell by $1.8 billion last year.

DeLaval tops 2,500 sales mark of feeding stations in a year

March 19, 2010
This week DeLaval produced its 2,500th unit of the new Feed Stations FSC40/400 – a solution created to help milk producers maintain greater control over production while reducing input costs. Feeding each cow to her individual needs throughout the lactation cycle increases milk production, optimizes use of feed, helps promote animal welfare, reduces concentrate waste, saves energy and helps cut CO2 emissions.

Proud of Mystic Valley Dairy

The newly renamed Professional Dairy Producers Foundation, formerly known as the Professional Dairy Producers of Wisconsin Education Foundation, has received a commitment from a Wisconsin producer that shows he is proud to dairy. Mitch Breunig of Mystic Valley Dairy LLC donated Jenny-Lou Million 2719 for this year’s PDPF fundraiser auction held March 16-17.

Young milk producer cooperative members gather to interact and learn

March 17, 2010
Maryland & Virginia Milk Producer Cooperative Association hosted their annual Young Cooperator Conference March 2-4 in Concordville, Pennsylvania. Twenty-four YCs gathered to hear about current issues in the dairy industry and build relationships with fellow young dairymen. After some icebreakers and get to know you games, the group was joined by the Maryland & Virginia field staff and management team to hear from Wawa Dairy’s marketing team.
