‘Bundling’ activity monitoring systems with repro expertise

August 29, 2012
Dario Martinez
Automation is currently a trending and hot topic across the dairy industry, especially the use of activity monitoring systems. With several equipment manufacturers creating the initial spark of interest in these systems, more and more dairy producers are beginning to explore options in employing this technology on their farms. What’s the next step to help smooth the transition and implementation of activity monitors on a larger scale in the U.S.? Although not a new concept, this year marked a noticeable change in how activity systems are marketed in the industry.

New activity system stores data with cloud technology

July 30, 2012
Dario Martinez
“Versatility," "adaptability" and "accessibility” are three words James Bringe, dairy equipment consultant for GEA Farm Technologies, uses to describe his company’s newest activity monitoring system. In early April, GEA Farm Technologies launched CowScout S, the company’s latest generation of heat detection technology. Unlike other systems, the CowScout S system stores the data that it collects using cloud technology, making it accessible to the producer at any time and anywhere.

Activity system monitors cow activity on a seconds basis

July 27, 2012
Dario Martinez
With reproduction costs accounting for a significant portion of the expenditures on a dairy, current trends demonstrate more and more producers looking into solutions to improve their reproductive programs, including the use of activity monitoring systems. “For years, there was discussion and academic studies that proved the strong correlation between a cow in heat and her movement pattern,” Cecilia Bågenvik, Business Manager for Farm Management Automation at DeLaval International, says.

New hybrid lagoon pump cuts through tough manure solids

July 19, 2012
Dario Martinez
Manure management is one of the many concerns dairy producers deal with across the country, especially when part of the nutrient management plan involves collecting and moving manure off of the dairy premises. Whether you are a dairy producer or commercial manure applicator, you probably have encountered some type of problem during this process that links back to the manure pump. Has your pump broken down due to gearbox failures? Ever have a situation where your propeller agitator doesn’t reach far enough into your lagoon or have a lagoon pump that has the reach but cannot cut through thick crust buildup?

Using indices to assess freestall comfort

June 27, 2012
Dario Martinez
A cow’s comfort level affects her health, productivity and performance if not assessed routinely over time. How are you gauging the comfort level of your cows, especially when it comes to the farm’s cow housing environment, particularly freestalls? “We all understand the importance of cow comfort,” Rick Grant, president of the William H. Miner Agricultural Research Institute, says. “There’s nothing more important to the cow’s comfort in terms of her environment than her lying surface.” There are several indices currently used to determine how comfortable the animals are in relation to their housing environment. Grant points out that three of the principal indices are the cow comfort index, the stall standing index and the stall use index.

Davis Dairy Plant: Providing more than just dairy products

June 8, 2012
Dario Martinez
Although South Dakota State University (SDSU) may be known for its diverse academic offerings and even its Hobo Day celebration, another source of recognition for the university is stemming from the dairy science program’s new dairy processing facility, Davis Dairy Plant. Construction of Davis Dairy Plant, located on SDSU’s campus in Brookings, South Dakota, concluded in the spring of 2011 and is currently producing a variety of dairy products.

Training program helps prepare future ultrasound technicians

June 8, 2012
Dario Martinez
According to a 2007 survey conducted by the USDA’s National Animal Health Monitoring System, someone other than a veterinarian performed approximately one-third of pregnancy exams on dairies in the West, and approximately one-quarter of exams on dairies with more than 500 cows nationally. With these survey results in mind, veterinarian Kevin McSweeney of Loveland, Colorado, began laying out the groundwork for a program to help train individuals in becoming ultrasound technicians.

Consistent management the key to growth at Minnesota dairy

May 18, 2012
Dario Martinez
Although managing dairy cows is the basic foundation of any dairy operation, the consistent management of cows and the people working with them is the principal factor to the success of Blue Mound Dairy near Luverne, Minnesota. Rick Van Santen and his wife, Carrie, own and operate the 1,000-cow dairy with the help of their four sons. Brad, the eldest of them and the dairy’s herd manager, explains that his father’s parents emigrated from Holland and started a farm in Iowa, which was relocated to its current location in Luverne in 1969. In the mid-’90s, Brad’s father purchased the farm from his grandfather and began expanding the operation.

Traveling road show targets heat stress

April 27, 2012
Dario Martinez
Heat stress causes losses in several areas on dairy farms across the country during the summer months – in addition to milk production losses. In order to help producers mitigate the negative effects of heat stress on dairy cattle, the Dairy Heat Stress Road Show program was created well in advance of 2012’s summer months. The road show took place in four locations throughout the southern U.S. and one location in Puerto Rico, making its debut last December in Florida. The remaining three stops of the road show took place in early April, with the last stop taking place in Tulare, California, on April 6.
