Déjà vu

April 13, 2021
Erica Louder
I just finished reading The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue. In this fantastical story, the main character, Addie, was cursed by “the gods that answer after dark” to always be forgotten.

Working with, sometimes for, Mother Nature

April 7, 2021
Erica Louder
I woke up with a start, panicked that I’d overslept. I rolled onto my side and grabbed my phone on my bedside table. It was only 3 a.m. I flopped back down and then decided to get up and at least check. I swung my feet out of bed and padded in my bare feet to the laundry room.

Separating personal and business expenses

March 24, 2021
Erica Louder
My entrance into the farm business world came by a rather unexpected job offer my senior year of college to work for our regional farm credit association.

Playin’ cowboy

February 10, 2021
Erica Louder

Impulse purchases

February 4, 2021

Last month, Bill lost one of his prized Tennessee Walkers to sudden colic. Like most Idahoans with horses, he’d grown up with quarter horses and taught his own kids to ride on quarter horses. In his late middle years, his good friend and hunting buddy, Don, introduced him to the gaited horse. One smooth gaited ride and he was converted.

The punny farm

January 8, 2021
Erica Louder
For the first blog of the year, I thought I should include a few jokes – you know, for kits and gaggles. It’s been a tough year, and I think we could all use a few “calfs” (I warned you – watch those puns). I’ve been hearing a lot of jokes about sheep I thought I could share. I started telling them to my dog to test them out, but she’s “herd” them all. I tried telling them to the cows next, but they were just “laughing stock.”

Ranching hits prime time

December 3, 2020
Erica Louder
About this time every year, Craig and I decide it’s time to find ourselves something new to watch. From November through March, we find time for TV. It’s dark-dark by 6 p.m., the kids are in bed by 7:30 p.m., the wood stove is burning and the TV is on. Last winter, we watched all six seasons of Longmire. Craig loved it enough to put up with my commentary, and I liked it enough to keep watching. This year, we started watching Yellowstone, per the recommendation of Amazon Prime.

A cowboy’s Christmas story

December 1, 2020
Erica Louder
For the last 20 years of my grandpa’s life, he wrote cowboy poetry and performed all over the Intermountain West. This is one of my favorites, and it is perfect for reciting around Christmas.
