Digital infrared thermography: An early warning system?

September 19, 2012
Dave Wilkins
Imagine taking a cow’s temperature simply by snapping a picture of her head. Want an early warning system to detect hoof disease or mastitis? Just snap a picture of the cow’s foot or udder. These and other scenarios may be possible someday with digital infrared thermography.

Who can legally preg check cows in your state?

August 29, 2012
Dave Wilkins
Short of animal abuse, dairy owners are pretty much free to do whatever they want with their own cattle. That includes checking cows for pregnancy, whether by conventional trans-rectal palpation or ultrasound. But what about farm employees, consultants and veterinarian technicians? Are they allowed to preg check cows?

Fall alfalfa harvest requires risk assessment

August 14, 2012
Dave Wilkins

Rotational grazing makes economic sense for Missouri dairy

August 9, 2012
Dave Wilkins
Fourth-generation dairyman Mike Meier likes to go hunting in December and January. There’s no reason to bring in hired labor to milk his 92-head herd while he’s gone. All the cows are dry. Meier first became intrigued with the idea of seasonal grazing when, in the mid-1990s, a demonstration dairy at the University of Missouri’s Southwest Research Center started showing the economic benefits of such a system.

New Mexico leads in per-cow production

August 9, 2012
Dave Wilkins
No state in the nation has squeezed more milk out of its dairy cows in the past three years than New Mexico. Producers got nearly 25,000 pounds out of each cow in 2011. What’s the secret? A combination of favorable weather, modern dairy facilities and aggressive culling appears to be helping producers get the most out of every cow. Cow comfort is an important consideration whenever new dairies are built, and New Mexico has seen several large new dairies constructed in the past 12 years, says dairyman Luke Woelber of Belen, New Mexico, who is president of Dairy Producers of New Mexico.

The National Dairy Producers Organization hopes to win over processors, grocers and consumers with a new logo that touts products made entirely in the U.S. The group’s “100 percent USA” seal was trademarked earlier this year, and leaders of the organization are now trying to persuade processors to use it on their products.

Oakhurst Dairy marks 90th anniversary

June 7, 2012
Dave Wilkins
Maybe it should come as no surprise that Oakhurst Dairy has continued to thrive amid a recession. After all, this is a company that survived the Great Depression. The Portland, Maine, company got its start in the early 1920s making deliveries with two horse-drawn milk wagons. Today the company delivers its products with a fleet of biofuel-powered trucks. It’s one of many changes that have occurred at the dairy processing company that is celebrating its 90th anniversary this year.

Iodine levels in teat dip a matter of debate

May 18, 2012
Dave Wilkins
No one questions the need for teat dip. It’s one of the most important products in the milking parlor and a key to protecting your cows’ udder health and your dairy’s milk quality. But the amount of iodine in commercial teat dip formulations is very much up for debate these days. The question is whether dairymen are getting what they’re paying for, says Allan Britten, president and laboratory director at Udder Health Systems. “It may not be an issue of efficacy or cow safety or animal health, but of value,” Britten says.
