In an effort to make its Happy Meals a healthier choice, McDonald’s says that come July it plans to add low-fat yogurt as a side option.

The fast-food giant, beginning July 4, will offer Go-Gurt Low-Fat Strawberry Yogurt as an option with the meal, according to areport by Bruce Horovitz in USA Today. The yogurt, made specifically for McDonald’s by General Mills, contains 25 percent less sugar than conventional Yoplait Go-Gurt.

While the addition of yogurt to the Happy Meal is another step in the dairy direction, some nutritionists note that the meal still comes with fries as a default, a not-so-healthy option. Julie Wenger, senior director of U.S. marketing at McDonald's, said customers can, however, request yogurt and apple slices in their place.

She told the newspaper that the company tested a yogurt product in Happy Meals a decade ago, but it didn't sell. Yogurt already is a Happy Meal option in Canada, she said. PD
